GREETINGS: We are approaching a blending time for the NARHS students as they see the light at the end of the road for their work during the 2017-18. At the same time, thoughts turn toward planning for next year. Rainbow Resource Center is already sending out teams to homeschool conventions with curriculum that will whet your appetite for new delicious studies.
Even we are planning ahead with some offers for you that could be a tremendous help. One is a packaged U.S. history course described during the 3rd section of this letter.
US History Course Description
U.S. HISTORY COURSE DESCRIPTION: By the time students graduate, all must have taken U.S. history. Here is a course description that adds some creative projects to a survey of our country’s story. Using the book Short Lessons in U.S. History by Richard & Linda R. Churchill, published by Walch Publishing students can read through the chapters completing all of the “Critical Thinking” activities and the Review Exercises. At the end of each chapter, the student should select one topic from the chapter to research and write an essay which includes a bibliography. Save the research papers in a binder.
While studying the chapters, the student will hand draw and label maps showing:
1. The 13 colonies
2. The 10 or so territory additions to the United States as history progressed
3. The division of the Union during the Civil War
Keep the hand-drawn maps in the binder with the research projects. (Why hand-drawn maps? The recall is cemented strongly.)
When you reach the section where the student learns about the founding documents, take a break from the book but supplement with the U.S. Constitution study guide available through your advisor, just for the asking. We provide these free of change for our NARHS students.
When studying the four major wars affecting the United States, create “folder projects” for each and keep these also in the binder with the research projects and the maps.
The War folders are created on regular file folders which are punched with three holes for mounting in the binder when finished. The first page of the folder shows an emblem of the war. Page two displays essays (folded in envelopes) and a timeline of events leading up to and during the war. Page three features details about the leaders, artillery, uniforms, and details specific to that event. Page four discusses the surrender, the peace treaty and the aftermath of the war. Detailed requirements for each of the four folder projects are included with this newsletter, including grading rubrics for the completed assignments. This history course can easily earn one full credit.
This history study can be enhanced by Progeny Press literature study guides focused on American history such as The Scarlett Letter, The Red Badge of Courage, Huckleberry Finn, and To Kill a Mockingbird. Each completed study guide is worth .25 credit.
With those two coordinated studies finished, the student earns two full credits that together strongly support the learning of American history. I have been teaching this exact same course to high schoolers this year who have responded with enthusiasm. We’ve also thrown in memorization of the “Gettysburg Address” along with some graph drawings of Abraham Lincoln and other historical people or items. I don’t think it would be an exaggeration to say that my students are loving the study.
Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.
